Yes — stainless steel is one of the safest cookware materials. It has no nonstick coating to wear off, doesn’t contain PFAS or PTFE, and is stable at high heat. A few details are worth knowing.
Why stainless steel is safe
Quality stainless (typically 18/10 or fully-clad 5-ply) is non-reactive for everyday cooking and has no synthetic coating — nothing to flake or off-gas. The small amounts of nickel and chromium it can release are negligible for most people.
What to check
- Food-grade, lead and cadmium free construction.
- Fully-clad (not a thin disc) for even heat and durability.
- Those with a true nickel allergy may prefer enameled cast iron or carbon steel.
