How to Clean a Stainless Steel Pan (Burnt-On Food & Discoloration)

Stainless steel is one of the most durable surfaces in your kitchen, and keeping it gleaming is easy once you know the tricks. Here is how to handle everyday cleaning, burnt-on messes, and the discoloration that sometimes appears.

Everyday cleaning

Let the pan cool, then wash with warm soapy water and a soft sponge or nylon brush. Scrub in the direction of the grain to keep the finish bright, rinse, and dry. Most Alva stainless is dishwasher-safe, but hand-washing keeps it looking new longest.

Burnt-on food

Skip the steel wool. Instead:

  1. Cover the bottom with water and a splash of white vinegar; bring to a boil for a few minutes to loosen the residue.
  2. Remove from heat, pour out the liquid, and sprinkle in a tablespoon of baking soda.
  3. Scrub with a nylon brush or non-scratch sponge. For stubborn spots, make a baking-soda paste and let it sit, even overnight, then scrub.

Important: never plunge a hot pan into cold water - the thermal shock can warp the base.

Rainbow discoloration (heat tint)

Those blue-purple rainbow marks are harmless heat tint, usually from overheating. Wipe the cooled pan with a little white vinegar or a stainless cleaner, then rinse. Cooking at lower temperatures prevents them.

White spots and water marks

Chalky white spots are mineral deposits from hard water or salt added before the water boils. Remove them with a vinegar-and-water wipe, and add salt only once the water is boiling.
