Ceramic cookware is everywhere now, but there is a lot of confusion about what it actually is. Here is a clear explanation - what it is, its benefits, and how to care for it.
What it is
Ceramic cookware uses a mineral-based (silica-derived) nonstick coating applied over a metal core, usually aluminum. It is not solid clay - the term refers to the coating. Done correctly, that coating contains no PFAS, PTFE, or heavy metals.
The benefits
- Easy food release with little or no oil
- Quick, even heating
- A non-reactive surface that is safe with any food
- Simple, wipe-clean maintenance
How to care for it
Cook on low-to-medium heat, use gentle utensils, and hand-wash. With care, a quality ceramic pan lasts well - see how long ceramic pans last and are ceramic pans safe.
